EBONYI SET TO QUEUE IN ALL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROGRAMMES,INCLUDING REFORMATORY INSTITUTION

Governor Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State,has expressed the readiness of State Government to queue in all programmes of the Federal Government in all sectors, including the reformatory institution.       Governor Nwifuru drop the hint at Executive Council Chambers,Old Government House, Abakaliki, when he received in audience the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institution.

Governor Nwifuru,who was represented by the Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa said, that Ebonyi State House of Assembly, was the first to pass a bill on prison reform, and commended the Committee for their efforts in proffering solutions to the challenges of the inmates,adding that the strides will enable the inmates to be totally reformed as they complete their jail terms.

"I want to commend the committee, ably led by my dear brother, Comrade Chinedu Ogah OON, because, throughout the federation, you have been working to proffer solution to the problems of the inmates."

"I once again welcome you, and give you this assurance that the State government will always queue into the programmes of the Federal Government in all sectors including the reformatory institution"

"If anybody is taken to custody, the end result will not be to destroy the person completely, but to reform the person to come out, a better person, and Ebonyi is queueing into that squarely, and we can assure you that at any time, always feel free to call on Ebonyi State Government, and we are very willing to work with you."

He enumerated the efforts of Ebonyi State Government, in improving the welfare of the youths, especially by empowering them with reasonable amounts of money to establish themselves, which has drastically reduced crimes in the State, noting that one, who is meaningfully engaged shall not have time to engage in crime.
"Here in Ebonyi, our Governor is doing very well to reduce the incidence of  criminality in the State. Our Governor has done a lot, and the result is evident because, there is low criminal records in the State. 
    On assumption of office,governor Nwifuru empowered over five thousand people with two million naira each, and they are busy in their various sectors, promoting the economy of the State and Nigeria in general. As we speak, he is empowering another 1,300 now, with one million naira each, and the target is still the youths. And instead of engaging in crimes, the youths are now busy with meaningful ventures, and according to the dictates of the law."

The Team Leader/ Chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institution, and Member representing Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogah, said that the Committee was in the State to oversight the Correctional Services, as powered by section 89 of 1999 Constitution as amended, and thanked the State Governor, Chief Ogbonna Nwifuru for his efforts in abating crimes in the State,adding that Ebonyi State has never had a record of jail break.

"We are here today Your Excellency, to inform you that the National Assembly is very open and ready to partner with all the States to ensure the implementation of the 1999 constitution as amended, and most of other Governors we have met, for instance, in Enugu State by the grace of God,has already allocated land for the relocation of Enugu Prison,the same applicable to Rivers State."

"This our Committee has the mandate,to oversight the correction institutions for treatment, training of the institution, and social rehabilitation of young offenders, oversight the juvenile correction centres, and all the institutions concerning the correctional services in the country."

"I have to commend Ebonyi State Government. Ebonyi State is one of the States we have not heard of any jail break, or any kind of record of crime, and due to what the Governor is doing, the crime has reduced drastically."

Hon  ogah enumerated the achievements of the Committee to include;Passage of the Correctional Service Act 2019, moving the correctional service from exclusive list to concurrent list, increased the ration feeding of the inmates, and Passage of Correction Service Fund among others.

The event was witnessed by the Secretary to Ebonyi State Government, Professor Grace Umezurike, the Principal Secretary to the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Matthias Adum, The Comptroller of Nigeria Correctional Service, Ebonyi State Command, Verra Elizabeth Ogwute,Executive Council members, among others.
